How To See God

But the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

Do you believe that the earth is filled with the knowledge and the glory of the Lord?

I do but I often forget this.

God’s knowledge surrounds me.  The knowledge and wisdom of God is within me.  God’s glory radiates from all of creation: humanity, all creatures on land and in sea, the trees, the flowers, the waters, the mountains, the sun, the stars, the planets.

How could I have missed this?

I am too busy!  I read my book or watch television.  I post on Facebook and quickly look to see who has liked and or shared my post.  I do what I need to do at work to get noticed.  I want to get ahead.

What can I do to see the knowledge and glory of the Lord?

I need to slow down!  I want to slow down!  How do I slow down?  I slow down when I take the time to sit quietly with God.  I let God teach me. I let God fill me with His knowledge.  Paradoxically when I slow down I also let God show me His glory.

Let me share how I sit quietly with God via my centering prayer practice:

1.     I select a sacred word as the symbol of my intent to open to God’s presence and action within.

2.     I sit comfortably, close my eyes and internally repeat the sacred word slowly and silently.

3.     When I become aware of thoughts, emotions and physical sensations, I return ever so gently to my sacred word.

4.     At the end of my centering prayer session, I remain in silence for a minute or two before I resume my daily activities.

Extended silence is difficult.  Don’t become discouraged.  Start small.  Take baby steps.  Perhaps initially you will only be able to handle five minutes.  Gradually increase the time frame of your session to fifteen or twenty minutes.  Slowly incorporate a second centering prayer time into your day.

As you incorporate silent prayer into your day, you will slow down to listen to and see God.  I think you too will discover that the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
