What does it mean to own your emotions?

Owning your emotions means you give yourself space to feel all the emotions, but you don’t let them define you.

Steven Furtick

I read this in his newest book, Do the New You: Six Mindsets to Become Who You Were Created to Be.

(Click here to learn more about this book.)

Let me take an inventory of emotions I know come in and out of my life.

I encourage you to take an inventory too.

In no particular order here they are:

Fear

Anxiety

Worry

Loneliness

Depression

Anger

Jealousy

Lack of confidence

Feeling sorry for myself

Disappointment

What is one thing I can remind myself?

They do not define me.

They are not who I am.

They are how I feel.

It is okay to feel them.

I need to acknowledge them.

However, I do need to let them go.

They do not define me and what I can accomplish.

Jesus reminds us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

Within us is peace.

We can have a deep, inner peace, despite the outer chaos.

We stand on solid ground with deep roots.

Jesus also reminds us, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

I find this very exciting and comforting!

I remind myself of this frequently.

I also like to recite this to myself, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”  ( Philippians 4:13)

Within me is an amazing power!

God is my partner.

I am never alone.

It is okay to feel your emotions but do not let them define you.

As much as possible I try to let God define me.

Centering prayer is vital to this process for me.

I open to the presence and actions of God within during centering prayer.

I let God pray in me.

I let God nourish my soul.

I trust God.

I need God.

When I partner with God amazing things happen.

Weekly Tip:  The Power of Gratitude. Gratitude can instantly change your mood. When you feel down and frustrated, think about the things you are grateful for: friends, family, the blue sky, your job, meals, your dog or cat, a novel, a movie. The possibilities are endless. Before I go to bed, I like to drop to my knees and reflect back on the day and thank God for all the things that I experienced today: French press coffee, productive day at work, walk with my wife, dinner with my family. I keep going till I think I am done. I want gratitude to be the last thing on my mind as I fall asleep. When I awake in the morning I thank God in advance for the great, productive and abundant day that I will have. Let me know if you need some help. Reach out here.
