Are You Ready to Let God Show You What Is Possible?

“Are you ready to give yourself to me and let me show you what I can do for your life?”

I love this final line from a passage in Elizabeth Gilbert’s newest book, All the Way to the River.

Here is the full paragraph:

Now God was asking me to trust. “What have you got to lose?” God asked me. “I gave you almost fifty years to do things your way, sweetheart—and how’d that work out for you? I let you sample everything out there to try to feel better. I wanted you to really make sure that the solution could not be found outside of yourself, before you finally turned to me. Are you done now, though? Have you seen enough? Have you suffered enough? Have you tried enough? Have you had enough? Are you ready to give yourself to me and let me show you what I can do for your life?”

I need to remember this.

I often try to do life alone.
I tell myself I’m smart enough.
That I have the resources I need.
That experience and knowledge will carry me through.

I’ve got this, I say.

Centering prayer and journaling gently interrupt that illusion. They invite me to slow down and tell the truth.

I do not have all the resources I need.
I do
not have all the wisdom I imagine I possess.

What’s missing?

God.

God has infinite resources.
God has infinite wisdom.

So why do I hesitate to tap into that?
Why do I resist partnering with God?

Doesn’t that make more sense?

God is patient.
God is gentle.
God waits—never forcing, always inviting.

Waiting for me to say:
I need your help.
I need your wisdom.
I need your resources.

Life goes so much better when I finally pray,
I am ready to give myself to You.
Show me what You can do with my life.

What do you think?
