Bearing Fruit in God’s Time: Reflections from Psalm 1

Rooted in God: A Reflection on Psalm 1

Recently, my wise spiritual director encouraged me to read Psalms 1–5 in the style of Lectio Divina—slowly, prayerfully, and with a listening heart. Afterward, I was to journal what stirred within me.

I began with Psalm 1, reading from my Kindle. As I moved through the passage, certain words shimmered with meaning, gently catching my attention. I reread the psalm, this time waiting for the Spirit to nudge me again. Three words stood out:

Bearing fruit.
Prosper.
Tree.

These words rooted themselves in me.

When I spend time with God, I am like a tree planted by streams of living water—steady, nourished, grounded. My roots grow deep when I consistently “water” the tree of my soul. I do this through centering prayer, journaling, meditating on Scripture, praying, being in community, and spending time in nature.

God is my stability—my rock and my fortress.
When I trust in God’s timing and wisdom, fruit begins to appear: peace, insight, creativity, courage. Blessings unfold—not always as I expect, but in ways I need most.

I’m reminded that God knows how to prosper me better than I know how to ask.

When I live in rhythm with God, amazing things happen. Not flashy or loud—but deep, meaningful, and lasting.

What words or phrases shimmer for you when you read Psalm 1?

Try reading it Lectio Divina style, then journal what the Spirit stirs in you. I’d love to hear what you discover.
