Confidence Grows When We Walk with God, Not Ahead of Him

Confidence grows when we remember we are not doing life alone.

What Is Confidence?

The dictionary defines confidence as a feeling or awareness of one’s abilities, or a trust in one’s circumstances, a belief that we will act in a right, proper, or effective way.

But how do we actually get confidence?

Do we wait until we feel confident and then act?
Or do we act first and let confidence follow?

Here’s what I’ve learned.

When I forget that God is my daily partner, I lose my confidence.
When I remember that God is always with me, my confidence returns.

When I remember that I can draw from the infinite wisdom, strength, and creativity of God, something settles inside me. I’m steadied again.

God loves me.
God does not want me to do life alone.
God desires to partner with me every single day.

I’ve come to believe that confidence grows when we remember this partnership.

Confidence builds when we take action, even small steps, toward our dreams and goals.
It grows when we do the thing that scares us, especially when we do it first thing in the morning.
It strengthens when we break big goals into small, doable steps and stop expecting ourselves to do everything at once.
It deepens when we stretch beyond our comfort zone and allow ourselves to learn, risk, and grow.

We lose confidence when we forget that we are not alone.
We lose confidence when we forget that God walks with us through every moment of the day.

When we stay connected to God, confidence becomes something we maintain, not something we chase.

Sometimes it’s as simple as quietly saying to ourselves,
“I can handle this.”

To remain connected to God and grounded in confidence I rely on a handful of daily practices: centering prayer, spoken prayer, the Jesus Prayer, journaling, affirmations, visualization, and gratitude.

These practices don’t remove challenges.
They remind me who I’m facing them with.

How do you maintain your confidence?

This is the same quiet work I explore with people in my one-on-one centering prayer coaching, learning how to stay connected, steady, and unhurried as we live our lives with God. You can schedule a free consultation here.

If you’re drawn to these kinds of practices, I keep a growing list of the tools and resources that support my own journey over on the Resources page. Explore them here.
