What is prayer?

I enjoy listening to the interview and the solo episodes of the Ed Mylett show.

He recently interviewed Jon Gordon.

During the last few minutes Jon shared his definition of prayer.

I found it helpful and powerful.

Let me summarize it here and add a little bit to it too.

“So I can attribute every success of my life to literally walking and practice gratitude and prayer over the years, renewing my mind. That’s where my healing took place. So how do you pray?”

P is for praise and gratitude.

We praise God for who He is.

We also thank God for all the small, medium and large things He does in our lives.

R is for repent.

Repent for the things that you’ve done wrong.

Ask for forgiveness.

Forgive others who repent and even if they do not repent.

A is for ask.

Ask God for what you want.

He may not give you what you want, but you should ask.

Y is for yield.

Yield means to surrender.

Get out of your ego, get out of your way, and surrender to the creator of the universe.

God, I can’t do it alone. God, I need you.

Use me for your purpose.

Guide me towards my purpose.

E is for expect.

Expect great things, and also trust in God’s plan for your life.

R is for receive.

You’re praying, and as you pray, receive God’s blessings.

Receive what he wants to give you.

Receive his gifts.

Receive his wisdom, his power, his love, his support, his ideas for you, his plan for you.

Try this for 30 days and see your life transform.

I help pastors, priests and other clergy create a long term sustainable centering prayer practice. This is vital! The important work you do can be physically and mentally draining. The time you take to sit with God will reset, refresh and reinvigorate your soul. You need this time so you do not burn out.
