What sacred word should I choose?
Pick a word that simply serves as a symbol of your intention to sit with God.
The sacred word helps set your intention.
We sit because we love God.
We sit because we trust God.
We sit because we want to open ourselves to the presence and actions of God within.
That’s it.
There is no ulterior motive.
Sometimes I think of centering prayer as a reverse prayer.
God prays in me what God knows I need.
Not what I think I need.
So what word should you choose?
Pick a simple one or two syllable word.
Something like:
• Jesus
• peace
• trust
• faith
If you notice the word constantly pulls you into thoughts or memories, it may help to choose another one.
For example, if the word “ocean” makes you think about vacations and the beach the entire time…
you’re probably daydreaming instead of returning to God.
Also, try to keep the same sacred word during your sit.
If you want to change it, simply choose a different word before your next sit.
Over time, I’ve also realized the sacred word is really just a sacred method.
Some people are more auditory, so a sacred word works well for them.
I discovered I’m more visual.
Years ago, I came across a Jesus icon in one of Richard Rohr’s meditations.
Sometimes I gently return to that image in my mind instead of a word.
Other people may use:
• their breath
• a sacred image
• or simply resting their gaze softly a few feet ahead of them
Use the sacred method that resonates most naturally with you.
The method itself is not the focus.
Your intention to be with God is.
