Why Do I Practice Centering Prayer?
I practice centering prayer because I want to open myself to the presence and action of God within.
I want to let go of “me.”
I trust that God will pray in me what I most need, even when I don’t know what that is.
I love God and simply want to sit with Him.
I want to rest in the rest of God.
I want God to heal and transform me.
To pray within me the actions He wishes me to take.
To form in me the wisdom I need for my daily tasks.
Sometimes I am anxious and worried.
I want to hand God my anxiety and exchange it for inner peace and calm.
I want to deepen my relationship with God.
And the beautiful truth is this: the depths are endless.
That is what makes this so exciting.
I want to experience as much of God as God is willing to share.
Thomas Keating once said,
“God’s love is like a blazing fire. If we let it, it will burn us to a crisp.”
He meant this as purification — the burning away of ego, false self, self-image, and fear — so that what remains is our true self in God.
I need my twice-per-day sits.
I cannot imagine my life without them.
They show me the way forward.
Silence teaches me who I am.
And ultimately, my work is even to let go of all the wants I’ve just listed.
To trust God.
And see what happens…
