You Are Not Every Thought You Have

Centering prayer teaches us to let go of our thoughts.

Not because thoughts are bad.

But because we are not every thought that passes through our mind.

Some thoughts are simply not true.

I am too old for this.

I am too young for this.

I do not have the right skill set.

I am not technical enough.

Now is not the right time.

I have had thoughts like these.

Maybe you have too.

Centering prayer helps me notice them.

Then let them go.

And over time, I begin to see that I do not need to believe every thought that shows up.

I can choose better thoughts.

I can handle this.

Failure is only feedback.

I am a better version of myself today than I was yesterday.

I can learn new things.

I can become more comfortable with technology.

Now might be the right time to try this.

Our thoughts matter.

We are not every thought we have.

But the thoughts we choose to believe can shape how we live.

You do not have to wait until you achieve your goal to experience peace.

You can experience peace on the journey.

You can experience joy on the journey.

You can experience God on the journey.

And sometimes you do not hit the goal you thought you wanted.

Be open.

God may have something else in mind.

So I come back to this:

You are not every thought you have.

Notice the thought.

Let it go.

Return to God.

And then take the next small step.

What thought have you been believing that may not be true?

Do you want a simple way to begin sitting quietly with God?

I created a free guide to help you start centering prayer without overthinking it.

You do not need to quiet your mind perfectly.

You simply begin, return, and open yourself to God’s presence.
