What do you do when you cannot quiet your mind during centering prayer?
Nothing.
You do not try to stop your thoughts.
That is not the goal of centering prayer.
Thoughts will come.
Plans.
Worries.
Memories.
Things you need to do later today.
You simply notice them.
And when you realize you are engaged with a thought, you ever so gently return to your sacred word.
Jesus.
Peace.
Trust.
Whatever word you have chosen as your symbol of consent to God’s presence and action within you.

Then another thought comes.
You let it go.
And you return again.
Sometimes you might do this many times during a 20-minute sit.
That is okay.
You are not failing at centering prayer.
You are practicing centering prayer.
Each return is another opportunity to consent to God.
Your job is simply to show up.
Sit.
Let go.
Return.
And trust God with the rest.
