My Centering Prayer Bookends

What is your centering prayer routine?

Let me explain.

Right now mine looks like this:

I open the daily meditation I read from Bishop Robert Barron.

I read the Daily Readings.

Today it was a reading from Acts, Psalms, and John in the Gospels.

I then set my timer for 20 minutes and begin my silent sit.

After my sit, I open my iPad and read from a book I am currently reading.

It might be nonfiction.

It might be fiction.

Right now I am almost done reading The Secret of Secrets by Dan Brown, so that is the book I read.

Then I begin my day.

My routine has changed over the years, and that is okay.

I call these my centering prayer bookends.

They make this time feel special.

I trust when they need to change, and that is okay too.

The most important thing is our sit with God.

But it can be helpful to surround it with two simple bookends.

Something before.

Something after.

A reading.

A prayer.

A few minutes with a book.

A moment of quiet.

Nothing complicated.

Just a simple rhythm that helps you show up.

What is your routine?

If you do not have one, I encourage you to create one.

Keep it simple.

Let it fit your life.
